Just two trees
From award winning film maker Bruce Walters (Avalon Now), Just Two Trees is a powerful expository that follows the ongoing fight of impassioned Pittwater locals to save two majestic gum trees from contractors’ chainsaws.
In May 2024 Northern Beaches Council informed residents of Ruskin Rowe, in Avalon NSW, of its intention to remove four Flooded gums which form part of the street’s historic avenue of trees. A large branch had fallen from one of the trees earlier in the year, causing damage to a resident’s car that had been parked on public land in the quiet cul-de-sac. This sparked a chain of events that ultimately lead to the removal of two of the four trees, and a month-long blockade of the remaining two by local residents and community groups. At the very core of the dispute is the notion of the risk versus the benefits of a community’s unique tree canopy.

How to plant and nurture the next generation of canopy trees
Be part of the regeneration: It may sound simple to plant a small sapling but there are steps you can take to give your young tree a better chance of survival. Graham Ross is arguably Australia’s best-known and most-loved horticulturalist, having been a staple on our screens and airways for over 40 years.
It should come as no surprise then, that Graham loves trees, and recognises the importance of their preservation and regeneration. In this short clip for Canopy Keepers he explains how to plant and nurture the next generation of canopy trees.
Artificial hollows – what are they and how do I bring them to my garden?
As more and more pressures befell our urban forests – what can each of us do to support the survival of our wildlife that need the habitat and food and water sources of our bio-diverse gardens?
Is your garden able to provide water, plant food sources and homes in hollows ?
This local Pittwater couple are so passionate about the wildlife that visits their garden that they set out to create some artificial hollows to encourage them to stay despite a mature tree on their land dying.
